Parkview Christian Retirement Community (PCRC) is a not-for-profit Christian retirement community. PCRC had its genesis in 1944, among members of the First Swedish Baptist Church of Portland (now Temple Baptist Church). Dr. Linus Johnson, pastor of the church, along with several church members, believed that the church should “provide a retirement home for members of the Columbia Baptist churches of Oregon”. The Oregon Baptist Retirement Home Society was established on Oct. 29, 1944.
In 1945 the Society opened its first facility, purchasing the Methodist Deaconess’ Home on NE Flanders St. in Portland. The facility was expanded in 1948 and 1960. The present 6 1/2 acre property and facility at NE 108th and Weidler Street was initially sub-leased in July of 1987 and was purchased on January 30, 1996. The buildings were then renovated and modified to add the services of state-licensed assisted living to the service spectrum of Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes. The campus now consists of 111 private apartments at Independent Living Campus and 63 private apartments at Johnson Assisted Living.
Although we are a church-affiliated community, residents need not belong to any church or practice any faith to live here. The mission of our organization is to provide seniors with independence and respect within an affordable Christian community that offers a continuum of residential facilities and services. For most of our history we have been known as Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes, but in 2009 the Board of Directors voted to change the business name to Parkview Christian Retirement Community. The corporate name remains Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes.
